Italy is strongly confirmed as a country cash-based. In fact, it is at the bottom of Europe in terms of number of transactions per capita. In the world it is among the 30 worst economies for use of cash with a circulating value in Italy on the GDP equal to approximately 15,4%.
This tells us the Report by the Unimpresa Study Center, just published, which reworked data from Banca d'Italia.
The most important points:
- In 2023 con 199 payments per capita per year without paper money, Italy is last in the euro zone (their 27 EU countries);
- Italy remains a country heavily dependent on cash. The ranking sees Luxembourg on the digital payments podium (8.738 operations for citizens), Lithuania (1.041), Netherlands (670);
- Cash still remains popular in Greece (230 operations for citizens) Malta (234) Slovakia (251) Slovenia (251) and Spain (289).
