The Global Wealth Report 2026 of UBS puts Italy in an interesting position in the world wealth ranking. But what do these numbers really mean for Italian families?
When we talk about the Italian economy we often think about salaries, inflation and cost of living. If we look instead at heritage, photography changes. According to Global Wealth Report 2026 at UBS, in 2025 the average wealth per adult in Italy was approximately 279.000 dollari.
To have some terms of comparison:
- Germany: 346.613 dollari
- France: 341.359 dollari
- Spain: 306.412 dollari
- United Kingdom: 292.808 dollari
- Italy: 279.439 dollari
- Japan: 211.846 dollari
Italy is in 23rd place among the main world markets.
The median wealth of Italians
Considering the median wealth, Italy goes up’111st place in the world, with approx 131.000 dollars per adult.
The median is particularly useful because the average can be influenced by large fortunes. In practice, indicates the value that divides the population in two: half have a higher wealth and half a lower one.
Wealth does not mean money in the account
However, there is an important clarification. The wealth calculated by UBS includes financial assets and real estate, net of debts. A family owns a house from 300.000 €, then, can have significant assets without having 300.000 euros available on the account, and it is a fundamental distinction for understanding the economic situation of a family because assets and liquidity are not the same thing.
What it means for Italian families?
The UBS report reminds us that to evaluate our financial situation it is not enough to look at the salary. It is useful to know at least four numbers:
- how much is our heritage worth?;
- how much debt we have;
- how much savings we have available;
- how much we can put aside each month.
Because a family with a good income but a lot of debt can have modest assets. Unlike, a family with a normal income may have built up significant assets over time thanks to savings and home ownership.
The Global Wealth Report 2026 it therefore tells of an Italy with significant private wealth. But for a family the most important question is not: “I am richer than average?”.
You: “My assets are solid enough to face the future?”
Because true wealth is not just how much we possess, ma how prepared we are to deal with unexpected events, retirement and future of our family.
