Anyone who owns one or more devices suitable or adaptable to receiving television programs must pay the TV license fee (R.D.L.21/02/1938 n.246).
Since it is a tax on the possession of the device, the license fee must be paid regardless of the use of the television or the choice of television broadcasters.
From 2016 (stability law n.208 of 28 December 2015) the subscription fee for television for private use (abbr. TV license fee) is collected by the Revenue Agency through the electricity bill.
Since, although in the meantime the European Union Commission has established that since 2023 the TV license fee should have been eliminated from payment via the electricity bill (because in violation of the competition rules of the sector) and despite promises by some politicians to abolish it, in the bill there is an additional expense item which indicates the amount and the period to which the TV license refers which contributes to forming the total amount to be paid.
News 2024*: the amount of the TV license fee has been reduced to70 Euro and will be charged in 10 monthly installments from 7 euros from January to October.
