Last 31 December the deadline for the completion of the implementation of the Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) for e-commerce transactions made with payment cards.

The Payment Services Directive PSD2 had introduced the need to continually adapt the payment security measures in order to strengthen the protection of users against the risk of fraud.

To do this, he introduces theStrong authentication, the procedure which is based on the use of two elements that only the user knows, possesses or characterizes it:

  • Knowledge (something that only the user knows, such as your password or a PIN);
  • Possession (something that only the user has, like a token / dongle or a smartphone);
  • Inherence (something that characterizes the user, such as the fingerprint).

Through strong authentication, both payers and merchants are offered a very advanced technical solution for combating fraud, that in case of problems, such as theft or loss, makes it more difficult for anyone other than the legitimate holder to use the card.

The Banca d'Italia recently released a Press release on the implementation of Strong Customer Authentication measures (SCA) for online card payments. And if you prefer information in a more graphic and visual form than textual, has released a specification on social media Infographic.
