When we get on a treadmill at the gym we think about health, fitness and well-being. However, few people know that this tool, today present in millions of homes and sports centers, it was born almost two centuries ago as an instrument of punishment. Nevertheless, in 2027, the treadmill itself will even award a world title.

When the treadmill was a torture machine

The story begins in nineteenth-century England. In 1818 the British engineer Sir William Cubitt designed a machine intended for prisons: a large stepped wheel on which the inmates were forced to walk for hours. The objective was twofold: punish prisoners and produce useful work. The energy generated could in fact be used to grind cereals, pump water or operate other machinery.

The conditions were very harsh. In some institutions, inmates spent up to six hours a day on the machine, virtually covering tens of kilometers without moving forward a meter. Many historians consider the Victorian treadmill to be one of the harshest forms of forced labor of the era. It is therefore not surprising that the term “treadmill” has become, in the English language, synonymous with repetitive activity, tiring and seemingly endless.

From punitive tool to health tool

During the twentieth century the fate of the treadmill changed completely. In the 1950s and 1960s, doctors began using it to evaluate patients' cardiovascular health. Subsequently, the fitness world realized the commercial potential of indoor running: train regardless of the weather, by traffic and time.

Technological evolution has then transformed the treadmill into a digital platform. Sensors, interactive screens, Personalized programs and online connections now allow you to monitor every aspect of athletic performance. What began as a tool of coercion has become one of the most widespread tools in the world for improving health and quality of life.

The first World Treadmill Running Championship is born

The last transformation is probably the most surprising. Italian society Technogym and World Athletics, the world athletics federation, they launched RUN X, the first World Distance Treadmill Running Championship 5 kilometres.

The competition will use digitally connected treadmills, capable of certifying performances and inserting them into global rankings in real time. The athletes will race in affiliated centers around the world, comparing themselves through an online platform.

Qualifying will begin in participating centres, while the world final is scheduled for Technogym Village in Cesena the 20 and 21 March 2027, with a prize pool of 100.000 dollari.

The economic lesson of the treadmill

The history of the treadmill demonstrates that the economic value does not lie so much in the product but in the ability to attribute new functions and new meanings to it. Today they don't just sell training equipment, but experiences, data, subscription services, virtual communities and online competitions.

The first treadmill running World Championship is therefore much more than a sporting event: it is a concrete example of how new markets and new business opportunities arise. Understanding these transformations means better understanding the economy that influences our consumer choices, business investments e, ultimately, also the family budget.
